This is a description of the main features in Spotfire Web Player.
This image shows some of the main parts of the user interface. The appearance of the user interface may vary depending on how the analysis was prepared. Note that not all functionality will be available when using Spotfire Web Player on Touch Devices.

Navigating Pages
An analysis can consist of several pages. You navigate between the pages of an analysis by clicking on the arrow icon in the upper right corner, by following links in text areas, by following links in the upper right corner, or by clicking on the tabs at the top of each page.
Note: The "Back" and "Forward" buttons in the browser cannot be used to navigate within the analysis.
Text Area
A text area contains information and instructions that were written when the analysis was prepared. It may also contain interactive controls that let you customize the analysis. An analysis may contain pages with text areas only (for instance, a cover page that describes the analysis).
Note: Some links that are available to users of Spotfire do not work when using Spotfire Web Player. Please contact the creator of the analysis if you encounter disabled links that you need to use.
Visualizations
Visualizations are the key to analyzing data in Spotfire Web Player. Different types of visualizations can be shown simultaneously. The visualizations are updated dynamically when the corresponding filters are modified. Visualizations can be made to reflect many dimensions of data by letting values control visual attributes such as size, color, shape, etc. Visualizations can be active or inactive. Click on a visualization to activate it. An active visualization is indicated by a thin black frame and a grey title bar. One way to explore visualizations is to mark items in them. Marked items are given an identifying color. The purpose of marking items (e.g., a bar segment, a pie sector, a line, a marker) or rows in a visualization, may be to view details for the item in the Details-on-Demand window (see below). If the visualizations are related, marking an item in one plot may affect the related plot. An example of this is details visualizations. If the analysis is set up with details visualizations, marking an item in one visualization, e.g., a bar showing sales per year, can display a detailed visualization showing sales per month in that year.
Note: Information in details visualizations are not displayed until you have marked items of interest in the main visualization. Also note that the related visualizations can be placed on different pages in the analysis.
More Visualization Options
Clicking on this icon will open a menu that will look different depending on what type of visualization is currently shown. If a table or the Details-on-Demand is open, you will be able to export the table data. If another type of visualization is open, you will be able to export the visualization as an image. If the visualization contains Lines and Curves that are set to update manually, you will be able to update them from this menu.
Show/Hide Legend
A Legend may or may not be shown. Expanding it will show what markers, size, color, etc are being used in the visualization. Whether it is shown by default or not is determined when the visualization is exported from Spotfire, and you may show or hide it in your current visualization by clicking this icon.
Highlighting in Visualizations
You can get detailed information about a specific item by pointing at it in a visualization. When you move the mouse pointer over an item (e.g., a bar segment, a pie sector, a line, or a marker) in a visualization, a tooltip appears displaying details about the highlighted item.
Filters
By adjusting filters, you reduce the data seen in the visualizations to "drill down" to the things that interest you. Filters are powerful tools that quickly let you see various aspects of your data and make discoveries. The visualizations linked to that filter are updated instantly to reflect the new selection of data.
Expand/Collapse filters
The expand/collapse icon can be used to improve the overview when working with two or more data table groups. Within filter groups, plus and minus-icons are used to expand and collapse.
When using a data table with many columns, you often have just as many filters. Sometimes it can be hard to find the filter you wish to modify by scrolling through the filter panel. A quick way to find a certain filter is to use the search function at the top of the filter panel.
Reset filters
Filters can be reset by clicking on the reset icon.
Note: Resetting filters will only reset visible filters.
Multiple Data Tables
In certain situations, a visualization can be based on data from more than one data table. These can be either related or unrelated. Being related means that they have at least one column in common. This column acts as a bridge between the two data tables, when they are visualized. For example, if one data table contains information about different kinds of fruit and their respective sum of sales, and another data table contains information about the same kinds of fruit and their fructose and glucose levels, visualizations can be created based on this related data to explore, for instance, the sum of sales for fruits with high glucose levels. It is also possible to load multiple data tables that are not related. In either case, there are certain ways to see which visualizations are using the same or related data tables.
Visualizations using the same data table or related data tables will display the same color on the color stripe on the right hand side of their title bars. This color will only be shown for active visualizations, and the others using the same or related data tables. Note: If only one data table is loaded, no stripe is shown.
When you mark an item in a visualization, corresponding items in other visualizations using the same or related data tables will also be marked.
The Legend can show what data table a visualization is based on.
If you change any filter setting affecting a visualization, any other visualizations based on the same or related data tables will also be affected.
Details-on-Demand
The Details-on-Demand window is normally placed in the lower right corner of the application. It displays the actual values of marked items in the active visualization. If you mark a bar in a bar chart, all the rows of data included in that bar are presented. Marking a record in a scatter plot might only display information about a single row of data. The Details-on-Demand can be used to show the exact values of a row or a group of rows. By clicking an item in a visualization, or marking several items by drawing a rectangle around them, you can see the numerical values and textual data they represent directly in the Details-on-Demand. If the More Visualization Options icon is displayed you can export the data from the Details-on-Demand.
Note: If the Details-on-Demand window is not displayed, this was specified by the person setting up the analysis in Spotfire.
Resize
You can resize all visualizations, the Details-on-Demand and the filter panel. When you move the mouse pointer to the border between areas on the page the pointer changes appearance. You can now click and drag the mouse to resize the visualization, Details-on-Demand or filter panel.
Refresh ![]()
In some cases, a refresh icon will appear in the title bar of the visualization. The reason for this is that that particular visualization is based on a data table that is either very large or that changes often. In order to get the latest data, click on the Refresh icon and the visualization will be updated.
Undo and Redo

Your last action can be reversed by clicking on the Undo icon on the left toolbar. To redo the action, click the Redo icon. Several steps can be both redone and undone.
Bookmarks
Bookmarks are snapshots of the state of an analysis. You can both add new bookmarks, and apply already existing ones in the Web Player. Click to open the bookmarks popover to view and manage your bookmarks. See What are Bookmarks? to learn more.
Open in TIBCO Spotfire
If you have Spotfire installed, you can continue to work with your analysis by clicking on the Open for further analysis in TIBCO Spotfire icon on the left toolbar. You can choose between opening and saving the file to disk. When you choose to open the file, Spotfire is launched (login may be required) and you can continue to analyze further.
Export Image
You can export images of the active visualization by clicking on the Export Image icon on the left toolbar. An image of the visualization will be opened in a new window. Markings will be visible until you click on something. Use the functionality of the browser to save or print the image.
Printing ![]()
Click on the print icon on the left toolbar to create a printer-friendly HTML version of the analysis. The HTML file can then be shared as an HTML file or printed on paper.
Note: If you use the print function in your browser without creating the printer-friendly version, configurations are needed in order to see markings in your printouts. You need to select the check box "Print Background Colors and Images" in the browser. In Mozilla Firefox, choose File > Page Setup. In Windows Internet Explorer, choose Tools > Internet Options > Advanced to find the check box.
Create PDF Report
Click on the PDF icon on the left toolbar to export the active page or all pages in the analysis as a PDF report. You can select whether or not to include page titles, visualization titles, filter settings and information in non-visible trellis panels and table rows.
New Version Available ![]()
This icon will appear on the left toolbar if a newer version of the open analysis is available. Click the icon to open the new version. It is possible that the analysis has been configured to be updated automatically. If it has, it will be updated without notice and the icon will not appear. Information on the updates will appear in the title bar of the analysis.
Note: If the analysis was created in an earlier version of Spotfire than 3.0, opening the new version will undo all filtering, markings and personal settings done to the current version.”
Status Bar
The status bar at the bottom of the Spotfire Web Player window indicates when a visualization is being loaded. It also displays information about the number of rows and markings in the data tables.
Information Icons
![]()
If there are items in the visualization that cannot be shown or might be misinterpreted because of some settings, an icon will appear in the title bar of that visualization. If something cannot be shown, a notification icon will appear. If there is a risk that something might be misinterpreted due to lack of data to calculate a curve or similar, a warning icon will appear. On mouseover, a tooltip will appear, and if you click the icon a longer description will appear.
